Sunnyside Road Bridge Information

Our preliminary design was completed and submitted to PennDOT for structural adequacy review in early 2009. PennDOT took approximately 6 months in reviewing the design and we are in receipt of review comments for both the geotechnical foundation report and the design of the bridges structure. PennDOT is requiring, as part of their review, additional geotechnical borings in order to meet their requirements. Once these borings are completed, a final revision can be made to the bridge’s substructure design, and the bid package can be finalized.

A supplement request was submitted to the Township and approved to allow us to proceed and to address the comments generated from the Structural Adequacy Review. Our geotechnical subconsultant is working with PennDOT’s review consultant to ensure the revised geotechnical report addresses all of their concerns.

Additionally, we understand that the Township is in the process of acquiring the necessary Right of Way and Easements for this project. We are not aware of the status or timing of the acquisition process.

The final design of the new bridge has been approved by PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission.  The utility poles located along Sunnyside Road in the area of the proposed structure have been relocated by PECO.  The construction plans have been finalized and are currently being finalakuzed abd reproduced for bidding purposes.  The Township Engineer is working with the Township Solicitor to finalize all legal language associated with the bid package and ensure all contract documents are completed prior to putting the project on the street for bidding,.

In addition, the Township Engineer and the Township Solicitor have finalized the necessary permanent slope easement and temporary construction easements for each of the four properties affected by the construction of the new bridge.  Meetings are being scheduled with the homeowners to describe the necessary improvements to their properties and for the documents to be signed.

It is anticipated to receive authorization from the Penn Township Board of Supervisors in early September to publically advertise the project.  It is projected that the bids will be opened for the project in October 2011 with construction to begin in November 2011.  The project is projected to take 6-8 months to complete, weather permitting.
